Top 5 Ways to Get Motivated to Exercise

It’s safe to say that most people are aware of the importance of physical exercise. It is a necessity to keep our bodies in shape, looking and feeling good, and prevent certain age-related issues. Like getting a toddler to eat their vegetables, getting started with a physical activity regimen can feel like an act of futility. You may have a busy schedule and feel like you can't find the time to work out, or maybe you just haven't seen the
progress you were hoping for and feel like giving up. There are many reasons people stop feeling motivated to exercise, or have no motivation at all, but there are simple steps you can take to get back on the right track. Check out these five helpful tips to get motivated to exercise:

1. Be Realistic.
Setting lofty goals can be a great way to get started, or it can drag you down the first time you miss your goal. Start with a realistic workout goal. Make it reasonable and easily attainable goal. Even if the goal sounds too easy, (e.g. walk 30 minutes a week), your success in meeting this goal will ramp up your motivation and enthusiasm to keep meeting, and maybe exceeding, that goal. The human brain loves success, set yourself up for it!

2. Recruit a Friend.
Make plans with a friend to go to the gym, take a walk, check out a group fitness class, go for a swim or play a round of golf. If you schedule a workout date, you're less likely to let your friend down by cancelling your plans. A benefit to this is that most people also tend to work out more intensely when exercising in groups versus alone. You can share your experience and enjoyment, plus, having a friend around makes it more fun!

3. Get Excited!
Physical exercise doesn't have to be something we dread. There are many different ways to get and stay in shape, there is bound to be some easy
exercise routines that makes you happy. If you're into relaxation and getting more flexible, try a yoga class. If you enjoy music pumping and dance moves, get into aerobics or Zumba. There is no shortage of activities or facilities to try. Check out the different options until you find the routine that makes you excited to exercise.

4. Make it a Priority.
Everything becomes easier once you make a habit out of it. Make it a
priority in your life to create a weekly exercise goal, and stick to it for one month. At first it may be difficult to get into the routine, but after a few weeks you won’t be able to imagine your daily routine without it. Stick to it and you'll find yourself more motivated with each passing day!

5. Reward Yourself.
Rewarding yourself for a good workout is a great motivator, if you do it right. You don't want to prevent progress, so try to avoid the temptation of treating yourself with an unhealthy treat after your workout. Instead, try to keep up with your workout routine for a week, and then reward your progress with something that makes you feel good - like a new outfit, a massage or a night out.
